If you need to test sooner,  leave a comment on our facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/gastoncountyamateurradiosociety/?ref=hl. and we will help you to get to a  test session.

**Exams are held at Southminster Presbyterian Church at 1401 Hoffman Rd. in Gastonia, NC  28054 (except for March 12, which will be held at the Charlotte Hamfest test session).  Someone will be outside of the building to assist you. The cost for the test is $10.  The $10 cost covers all test levels taken at that exam session provided that the examinee passes the previous level license exam.  (So it is possible to take the tech, general and extra exams for $10 given each prior level is passed).

GCARS examinations are accredited through the WCARS VEC.

A great resource to use for studying for your ham radio license is www.hamstudy.org  I have no electrical or radio background.  I didn’t know a capacitor from a resistor or that ohm is a law and not just used in yoga chants.   I used hamstudy.org to study for all 3 levels and I passed! You too can become a ham!

If you have questions, please leave a comment!

    1. Thank you for your post on the GCARS website. We are excited that you want to get your ham radio license! There are a lot of great resources but my favorite is http://www.hamstudy.org and it is free. It has study flashcards and practice tests. I had no electrical or radio knowledge prior to taking the tests and I passed all three tests (technician, general and extra) using this website.

You can print off all the questions from the technician level test pool from the NCVEC website below.

GCARS will be offering tests at the Charlotte Hamfest in March. Please see our website, http://www.gcars.org, for more test dates and info.

Please let me know if you have any other questions!

    2. Hi Allen, Why don’t you attend the GCARS meeting this coming Monday, 7:00 pm at the Red Cross Building downtown , 190 S. Oakland St., upstairs. You’ll meet a great bunch of folk, all HAMs and I’m sure you can find some study materials to borrow. You can always go on line to: http://www.hamstudy.org. I personally used QRZ.org and found it really handy.
